The PEM ED Podcast is hosted by Andrew Sloas, DO, RDMS, FACEP, FAAEM, FAAP. 

I am a board-certified emergency medicine physician and an assistant professor of adult and pediatric emergency medicine at the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.  I originally trained in adult emergency medicine at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston before going on to complete a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine ~ Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. 

I graduated medical school in 2001 and completed an orthopaedic rotating surgical internship at the National Naval Medical Center San Diego before attending Naval Flight Surgery School in 2002.  I was stationed at Camp Pendleton California for the remainder of my tour of duty, which took me to Kuwait and Iraq with a United States Marine Corps helicopter squadron in 2003 for Operation Desert Storm.  After returning from the war, I continued work as a Naval Flight Surgeon until the time of my discharge as a Lieutenant Commander in 2006. 

After the military I completed my residency in emergency medicine and then briefly departed academics for community emergency medicine.  While in private practice I quickly had the epiphany that my interests were in education, difficult airway, critical care, ultrasound and pediatric emergency medicine.  With that realization I returned to academics and completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine.

During the course of my medical training I have completed over one year of year of critical care subspecialty training.  I also served as one of the emergency medicine critical care attendings and lecturers during my tenure as faculty at the University of Texas.  I have a voracious interest in ultrasound and hold a degree as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS).  I believe that ultrasound will cure the world; or at the least, it will be responsible for the diagnoses that will lead to those cures.

Sloas Christian Medical Services, PA is a company that my wife and I own and operate.  My wife is a board-certified pediatrician and also involved in academic medicine.   I started the company when I was in private practice as an independent contractor.  The company takes no funding from private sources other than remuneration for services rendered in the practice of emergency medicine.  It remains in existence to fund our future medical missions and missionary work. 

I hope you find the PEM ED Podcast to be an entertaining and enjoyable way to digest critically important emergency pediatric concepts medicine.
